Onan 2500 LP Generator:

My oil level is fine, and I tried running it without the air filter, it starts and runs fine for  about 5 minutes, then it starts to run a bit rough. at about  10 min. it starts to sputter and get hot and then it shuts down. Has anyone else had this probelem?

Mine did sputter and cough when I got it,
It turned out to be the park plug wire, it would wiggle, turn a bit and then the spark would start to jump to the engine caseing, instead of making its way into the cylinder.

LP tanks are full?

Working with LP is rough, the specialized tools to check/set pressures is a pain...

Thanks for your suggestion regarding the plug wire. I am planning on pulling the plug and replacing it and checking the connection, but the Onan dealer who installed the genset installed it so I must pull the unit to get to the plug (smart). I also have talked  with a mechanic friend (as the local Onan "full service" dealer will not work on RV gensets anymore! They say they dont make enough profit"). My mechanic friend thinks there is a cooling fan that may be causing it to overheat, possible a loose or broken belt. It may have an electric fan that is having problems, I need to verify which is has. The biggest problem is I must pull an interior closet completely apart to get to the generator (brilliant Onan Installers again. I will post a solution once I figure it out.

I appreciate  the dialog.

High temp is caracteristic of a lean condition, as is sputtering and dying. Possibily a piece of debris in the fuel line, the first place it would stop is the pressure regulator.  Good luck. Tootone.

Can't help you directly, but you might want to use the "Search" function on the forum.  I remember previous threads on Onan LP generator issues such as this one:

Please let us know what you find out...

How would I check for debris in the regulator? If it is inside the unit can it be blown out with a burst of air?

I am going to check out the regulator for debris as Tom sugested, and if that doesn't pan out as my problem I am going to open up the unit to check to see if I have an electric cooling fan that may not be function or a fan belt problem. I will let you know what I find.

Thanks,

Scott
