Well, there's still a very slight chance. Our house buyer's buyer's buyer is looking shaky, and if they don't close there could be a ripple effect. My wife doesn't want to have our house proceeds FedEx'ed, so if we haven't left for TX by then we'll be be able to come up, or come by, one.

Btw, if any of you are bow hunters, you might see if you can get Charlie and Rosalee (Moqui CG hosts this year) to let you in on some secrets. I guess Rosalee is the champ, there.

Be prepared for some serious chilly. Night before last it got down to 23 degrees just a bit down the road. Take lotsa antifreeze and/or warm clothing and bedding. Yes, that's still two weeks away, but I've seen snow on Memorial day and night temps in the 30's in early June.

A kinda interesting thing to see in the area is right around sunset. There's a "night-blooming (cerius?)" flower which is fascinating to watch. With the moisture this year, it might could be a good year for 'em. A good place to view is on the 751 road, just south of the turn-off for Moqui. It's signed for Rock Crossing CG and Blue Ridge Res.

Also, if you have 4wd or ATV's, you can head toward the road to the Blue Ridge CG, proceed to the left of the campground entrance up the hill to the intersection of the 751B road, turn left. About 2-ish miles to Moqui lookout tower. For some, it's the onliest cell coverage. The lady who will "man" the tower this year is a quilter, and likes to visit with other quilters and show off her handiwork. The tower is also a great view of the rim forest to the east and south.

The tower can also be accessed by 2wd from a forest road off AZ87, ask your hosts for directions.

Charlie and Rosalee are familiar with the area and can point out other possibles, such as good atv riding.

Hope y'all have a nice visit.

Thanks, Aridzona Shooter, for your post listing some of the area attractions (and cold weather warnings!)  We really hope you can make it.

We have confirmed the Simmons area of the Moqui Group Campground.  The cost is $130.00 total, which we will pay in advance and then settle up with everyone when they arrive.  So far, it looks like we’ll have about 15 people, assuming that everyone who has confirmed is bringing a “significant other.”  We’re bringing our 9 year old grandson, also.  THERE ARE STILL LOTS OF SPOTS AVAILABLE!!!! We can have up to 50 people, so if anyone has had a last minute change of plans and still wants to attend, just let us know -- or just show up!!  Info on the campgrounds and a map are available at http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/coconino/recreation/mog_rim/moqui_camp.shtml

Come prepared for nice days and cold nights, rain is not unusual, but hopefully not as much as we had at Roosevelt!  As this campground doesn’t have ramadas and picnic tables like Roosevelt did, if you have a folding table and E-Z Up shelter, please bring them so we can build our own social club!  Barring any fire restrictions, please bring firewood or plan on a trip or two to collect it, we'll bring a chain saw.  We’ll be bringing the horseshoes, along with a variation of the game which would probably be called “golf ball horsehoes” which requires less skill to play (this one has Linda’s vote!)  If you have a favorite game or activity, feel free to bring it!  Olan has requested someone bring extra poker chips (dip not required).

We thought that we’d continue Olan and Billie’s tradition of a potluck dinner and breakfast, since it went over so well with the group last time.  Bring your own plates, utensils and drinks.

Our very loose schedule is as follows:

FRIDAY, June 3:

Check in is from 2:00 on, we’re planning on being there early to greet everyone, and will have some munchies set out in case anyone feels they may faint from hunger while setting up camp, but you’re on your own for dinner!

SATURDAY, June 4:

Explore during the day, play games, or just sit around and talk.
Potluck dinner!
We need volunteers for main dishes, side dishes and desserts.

SUNDAY, June 5:

Another good day for exploration or relaxation, or maybe a group trip to the lookout tower to enjoy the view.
Dinner on your own, or would you prefer another potluck?  We could potluck the side dishes and have everyone grill their own meat – let us know!  Maybe Olan and Billie would volunteer another Dutch oven cobbler?

MONDAY, June 6:

Potluck breakfast!  Linda will make another French Toast Casserole, we need volunteers for other breakfast foods, meats, potatoes, pastries, etc.
Check out by noon or so.

We're really looking forward to seeing everyone again, and meeting the new people (and of course, showing off our new 5th wheel!)

Everyone,

I'm bringing the dutch oven and have a new recipe for a peach cobbler! I'll bring my ice cream churn and we can make up some homemade ice cream too.

I'll be making some homemade sausage today to bring for the breakfast. Hopefully it will taste good :?. I'll test it before I bring it.

Can't wait to see everyone and meet the newcomers...

Olan and Billie

Lets see if I can get this right.  I am going to bring a couple of steaks and pasta salad, and will bake a ductch oven cake for dessert for Saturday evening.  Monday morning I will make a pot of burritto filling and a couple of Doz tortillias.

Ken -- you're a bright guy, you should be able to find it without a GPS!!!  Yes, we're excited too, especially since this is the first Memorial Day weekend in a long time that we haven't camped somewhere!  Oh well, a week late is better than not at all!  Besides, think of all the people that WON'T be there because they went camping this weekend!  Glad your wife can make it this time:)

Has anyone considered a propane outdoor fire device?   I've seen them used in Colorado during burn restrictions by the CG host and it seemed pretty nice.  No smoke in your eyes (unless you like that), and the propane is probably cheaper than buying wood by the bundle.

Ken,  I'll look into to see if there are any geo-caches in the area.  If a few others bring their GPS units we could see if we can find some of the caches.  There's a geo-caching website at http://www.geocache.com.

Well, I made the homemade breakfast sausages and they turned out pretty good.  Can't wait to try them out on you :D .  I also tested out the ice cream churn and it still makes pretty good ice cream.  I'll be finishing off what I made and bringing that along for the peach cobbler dutch oven treat.

Ed (aka Speedbuggy), Thanks for the fire report.  I'll grab a big bag of wood and bring along.  I'm hoping we can have a big fire like before.  I look forward to going to bed smelling like smoke :?.  I've seen some of the pictures of the propane fireplaces.  They have the wood stack and look pretty good.  I've wondered about it lately with the crazy fire restrictions.

See everyone soon,

Olan and Billie

I've seen several TV shows lately about Metor Crator near Winslow.  We're  thinking  about making  the trip to see it next weekend since we will be in the area.  Any one else interested?

We might be interested if it's not too far away -- we haven't been there in 14 years.  Our grandson would love to see it.

The Meteor Crater web site says 20 miles west of Winslow. We will be about 40 miles from Winslow, so about a 60 mile run one way.  Sounds like a doaable half/3/4 day trip.  According to the map it is south of I 40 and there is another road that cuts accros from 87 up to I 40 and goes by the crater. Might make a shorter trip, don't know how good the road is.  Mapquest shows the road to be Chavez pass road.  If you have a better map than mine maybe you can tell what type of road it is.

We visited Meteor Crater last summer.  They have a website at http://www.meteorcrater.com/ and you can see our pictures at http://groups.msn.com/OlanWade/meteorcrateraz.msnw.

If I remember it's $12 a person, but I think you can get a dollar off at the gas station/RV park going in to the park.

They've spent a lot of money over the years on the visitor's center.  The video is pretty good and they have other information on various craters around the world.  One point of interest is that the gas station/RV park was where they filmed the final "pie eating" scene of Star Man.  It's been renovated since then so if you've seen the movie it won't look the same.  If you look to the east of the gas station/RV park you'll see a stone tower/building.  It's the original meteor crater visitor center when it was privately owned.  I heard from a local that the owner would charge a quarter to go to the top of the tower to see the crater.  Unfortunately you couldn't see much from there.

See ya this Friday,

Olan and Billie

The 6.0 Ford gremlins got me at last.  The truck lost an injector about 20 miles before Gallup. Spent all afternoon Friday and till about 3 Sat trying to get it running again.  They replaced the injector but still could not get running right. So instead of risking have more trouble futher from home, we head back to Farmington.  I will not be there at all.  If I owe some for camping fees PM and me with an address and I will send rembrsement to whom ever, being that I said I would be there and didn't.

Have to see what I can get done to the truck before friday, supposed to leave for a 2 week road trip west ward Sat. That could change as well.

Man am I UNHAPPY!  NOT so much at the truck but missing the camping.  I worked 44 striaght nights and this was only my second days of sense and I wanted to just sit and relax.  Instead I got two days running around Gallup visting wife's relitivies and friends.  Went through a whole tank of gas in the Jeep. She grew up there and knows everyone. A night in a motel instead of the trees. Eating at resturants instead of camp fire cooking. And wondering what to do with a broke truck.  Trying to decide if I should continue on or go home. Not a very relaxing days off.

Don:

We're sad that you had problems, but glad to hear that your problems did not involve any accidents or other incidents that could have involved personal injury.  Don't worry about the CG fee.  It's all taken care of.

All:

We had a good trip home (mostly).

1) We stopped in Payson to see an old co-worker that I had not seen for over 3 years.

2) When we got within cell phone coverage around Phoenix, we had a couple of bad messages.  A life-long personal friend of Janet's was diagnosed with terminal cancer just over a month ago, and went into a coma over the weekend.  Not good.

3) Also, got a call from my brother that my mom isn't doing well.  Nothing real serious, but both parents are in their mid 80's and not getting any better.

4) On the north end of Tucson, I blew the left rear tire on the trailer.  Other than the lost tire, it all worked out OK.  No damage to the trailer, changed out the spare in about 30 minutes, had all the tools I needed and even had my air compressor to inflate the spare to the correct pressure.

Back home now.  Had a good time.

God is good.
