Tom,
I know that you took the lead on the trip to Quartzite, but I wanted to throw something out there to get interest started. The show is coming up the 19-27th of January http://www.quartzsitervshow.com/.
I had an idea and would gladly pursue this if everyone is interested. I like to get a small roasting pig to cook in a pit out in the desert. It would be about $200 for a 25 lbs pig (cleaned and ready - organic). I'd need to get a few bags of lump charcoal and some apple wood, but that would be only around $25-30 bucks.
If we're still interested in going to Quartzite and would be interested in roasting a pig, I'm up for it!!
See ya,
Olan

Olan,
That sounds like a great idea. But we are not going to be able to make it to this one or any in the near future. I am transferring with my my job to Tallahassee, Fl. I will be leaving at the end of next week to start work. Sherry will follow as soon as she sells the house. Which we hope will be soon. We will miss camping with you guys and hope we can find a similar group in the North Florida area. Good luck to all in the group and hope you all have fun in your camping adventures.

Ed & Sherry,
Sounds like a neat adventure and will get you closer to FSU! Good luck with everything and keep in touch. Maybe we'll see you when we head out on an upcoming east coast adventure we're planning (head towards Savannah and then up to NC).
Have a Happy New Year!

Well, I guess that kills our Thanksgiving 2008 outing in San Diego. Sorry to hear that Ed and Sherry are moving. Best of luck in Florida.
As the the outing at the "Q", I am interested assuming that we have no schedule conflicts. I need to schedule a minor outpatient surgury to have the hardware removed from my elbow, but don't expect to have that happen till Feb.

Do you folks have any dates when you are going to be there & where you are going to camp?
I've been going every year since 2001 & really enjoy it. Lots to do, there, & it's a lot of fun.
I, usually, camp just past the 99 mile marker, going south on Hwy.95 (center of town) about 4 or 5 miles. It's a free camping area. There is a gas pipeline road to the west of the hwy. & you can camp anywhere south of the gas line road, for free. Anything north is a fee area.

We will all miss you Ed and Sherry - hope your house sells very fast. During the RV show is the time to go, are you thinking of MLk weekend ? That area south of town that is the blm free area is great and is about 5 miles from the show.

We are considering when we should go. We like to attend the RV show. We also plan to have our kids and grandkids come out one weekend.
We have enjoyed the free BLM area south of the pipeline on other trips. There even was a host the last time we were there.
As a result of flooding at the beginning of December we may be at the mercy of the rebuilders. Tomorrow they will finally get to the pack out, three weeks after completing the drying.
So, set a date and we will work our schedule to fit as well as possible. The pig sounds great. I am not sure that our kids will participate.

Ed and Sherry,
You will be missed, and good luck with this new portion of your lives.
And for the rest of you guys,
I will have to turn the reigns of this one over to someone else, because after over 20 years of employment with Corporate Express, they eliminated my position and I was laid off on December, 5th.
Therefore I do not know what we will be doing on that weekend. I hope to be able to go, but life is kind of up in the air right now. They did give me a package so we are okay right now, but I need to get out there and find employment.
I will keep everyone updated on what we will be doing.

We will be in Quartzsite, arriving the Jan. 17th and leaving the 21st. Where will you guys be--- Last year we spent a couple of nites on BLM land about 3-4 miles N off of 95---there is a street name but can't remember it. We have family camping just North of the Loves gas station at $5/ nite which is a lot closer to the flea markets/swap meets areas and will probably get together with them Sat. Are you going to be there during the RV show or earlier--Lars

We will all of you guys as well. Sherry told me we have to find a group like ya'll to camp with but I am not sure we can duplicate the comraderie we felt when we camped with you guys. I have a Brother and SIL who have a hybrid trailer so we will not be alone but to find a diverse group like you will be impossible. Enjoy yourselves and in 12-15 years when I retire we will surprise you and show up for one of outings. I hope you all have nice lives and we will see you later.

Okay...I'm thinking about taking over for Tom, BUT I've got an appointment on the 25th (the last weekend of the show) for some final measurements on some kitchen cabinets. Having never been to Quartzite (expect passing through), I'm not sure with the lay of the land and best areas to camp.
If we can't make Quartzite, I'm prepared to plan the next event sometime around March. I'm thinking maybe Pichaco Peak or White Tanks. Heck, we could even do Roosevelt again!
Let me know what you folks think!
See ya,
Olan

It's beginning to look as if Quartzsite might be a bit too much to organize this year. We're still up for it if we want to give it a try, but I'll go anywhere as long as there's food and drink. Maybe somewhere down Ken's way before it gets hot again.

Olanwade,
Your concerns about the lay of the land & where to camp are somewhat warranted. With a large group trying to meet at a certain place could be a problem because of the physical size of the camping areas. Also, these are not designated/marked camping spots. It's just a big hunk of desert & you find any place that seems suitable, to you.
The other problem is that this area is so big that it would be hard to find one another. If you camped in the middle of it, it would be very difficult to explain just where you were, to someone else. There are a lot of campers out there & a million trails to follow to get to a campsite.
With that said, it would be a shame to miss out on this camping experience &, especially, the RV Show & all the other things to see, in the Quartzite area. That many people just can't be wrong & they keep coming back, year after year.
I've been going since '01 & camped, every year, since '02. If you go south on Hwy. 95, out of Quartzite (about 4 or 5 miles) you will see Mile Marker 99. Just past this marker (on the West side of the hwy.) you will see all the RV's. I believe this area is called "Roadrunner" camping area. It is bounded on the N. by a dirt road called Gas Line Rd. On the S., it is bounded by a paved road & on the E. by Hwy 95. There is a dirt road boundry on the W. You can camp (for FREE) anywhere within these boundries.
Camping just S. of Gas Line Rd.(Northern-most boundry) would be the easiest for everyone to find because it's a limited area but, it is also very dusty because of the amount of traffic on that road. If the wind is blowing towards your camp, some folks won't enjoy it. There are better camping areas further within the boundries but, it would be harder to find one another.
The physical area inside the boundries is probably about 1/2 mile (N.-S.) &, about 2 miles (E.-W.). There is plenty of camping, in this area but, a LOT of RV's, also. This area is pretty small compared to most of the other free camping areas. The fee-based camping areas are much larger & you would still have major problems trying to find one another.
I don't mean for this post to have a negative-tone, to it but, if you can accept this problem & find a way around it, this is the worst problem you will have, there. One of the things a larger group could do is decide who would arrive first. If that person has a cell phone, give the number to all the others. As the others arrive, call ahead & have the first person meet them at the intersection of Gas Line Rd. & Hwy. 95. That's what a lot of folks do & it seems to work.
Again, it would be a shame to miss-out on this event because of difficulty in finding one another. Thousands of people come from all over the U.S., Canada & even other parts of the world (I met a guy that shipped his motorhome, from Europe) & the Quartzite RV Show is one of the big things on their agenda.
Hope this helps.
Joe Fihn

We still are in a quandry on the time of our attendance. We still have not set a date with the repair people to fix the flood damage to our house. Also we have some side items which will take us away a couple times. But we are still game for 1/19-1/27 or something like that.
As for the location, the place south of town is our choice, we have been to the other BLMs and that one did not have the same crush as others. A cell phone works well to connect. So about 1/17 we should check to see who will be there first and then make the connections as we go. For security reasons I suggest we share our cell phone numbers before departure.
Once we have a site picked out, it is a piece of cake to find it again. The only time we had a problem was when our son got lost on a 3 wheeler and could not describe his location, it took half an hour to find him.

If we don't make it for the show this year, I'd be up for a get-to-gether sometime after the show so that we could all get familiar with the area. Cell phones and a GPS would help a lot with finding a location.
As for other locations later this winter, I'm up for most anything. Roosevelt is always nice (well, except for maybe summer). Pichaco Peak or Kartchner would be of interest. Patagonia Lake SP might work OK too, but don't plan on getting a hook-up site. I've never been around Yuma, so I'd like that too if anyone has a place in mind there. I'd love a long weekend at Williams this summer like we talked about last fall.

We'll I'm not going to take the lead on this one, but will gladly plan for an outing around March. Billie's just getting over a case of pnuemonia and I've been fighting a bad case of sinusitus for the past 3 weeks. I've tried to fight it off with antibiotics, but now I'm just going to have to let it run it's course.
I'm going to look into Picacho Peak or Organ Pipe NPS campground around the end of March. Picacho Peak has a civil war re-enactment the 8-9 of March so we'd want to go there after that weekend. The weather should be pretty nice around the end of March. I'll look into the Pichacho Peak group area, but I think it may be more reasonable to go with individual spots. Picacho Peak has a fee for the group and then individual fees for each camper. Really depends on how many are attending.
Organ Pipe has a group area, but no electricity available (not a problem for me). It is along the Mexican border and they have had a few problems down there with the international border. It's right in the middle of a route used by illegals crossing the border. I'll check into the security issues and costs when I call the ranger. It is a very beautiful area.
See ya,
Olan

| Olan: Hope you and the little lady are feeling better real soon. As soon as you're up to it, I'm game for a mini outing with just the two of us (or four if we count the ladies). Others certainly welcome too.

It appears that the turnout is quite limited. My wife and I have reorganized our schedule and are committed. We will arrive at the free BLM area at 99 mile marker late on the morning of 1/24 and will depart either 1/27 PM or 1/28 early AM. Our kids are not committed so it may just be the two of us avoiding the crush of society.
