The wife and I will be leaving So Cal, Los Angeles are on the 13th of June. We would like to see some new sites on the way. We plan to spend a couple of day in Mammoth Lakes. Does anyone have any suggestions for areas around the La Grande Rally for either going or coming back. We don't have to be back to work until the 30th of June. Any suggestion or information would be appreciated. We have never been to that portion of Oregon only the coast.

Are you into history?   Explore part of the Oregon Trail from La Grande south to the Boise area.

From Winnemucca, go NW to Denio and Fields, Burns and you can spend some time in the Steens Mountains, and Malheur wildlife refuge.

Once you get to LG, check out Wallowa Lake.   Take a drive to Hat Point (no rv's) and look down into the Snake River Canyon.   Incredible views and lots of wildlife.

email Union County Tourism for info and check their website for information

http://www.visitlagrande.com/

Looking forward to meeting you at the rally.......:)

Be sure to see Crater Lake -either on the way up or back. There are lot's of volcano stuff as well as the High Desert Museum in Bend. In north central Oregon there are some fossil beds - try your hand at finding a thunder egg.

Last year my wife and I took a day trip from the rally to Baker City - saw the wagon ruts from the Oregon Trail and went through the Visitor Center there. We then took the Elkhorn Scenic Drive and visited the gold dredge and railroad just west of Baker City. Lots of good scenery and history to see.

For more information on what to see in Oregon you can visit

Readers Digest has a book "The Most Scenic Drives in America." I picked it up at the library---good ideas for triping.

The Donner Summit area has history galore. Railroads, wagon trains, and hiking will fill your days.

Denio was mentioned--there is an opal mine that you can go into, pay a fee, and dig your socks off. Also, there are old atifacts in the desert around Denio. I spent time in the area placing telephone lines and there is a lot to do. Beware, no Costco's or large shopping!!

Northern Idaho is GOOD. Lots of places to get away, pull over and camp, see animals, hike, and bike. I do mean just pull over and camp---

Western Washington has so much, a person could spend summer there, and not have enough time to see it well.

see ya out there

Ray, does Denio have ANY shopping?  A visitor to Oregon coming up that way might think they were completely lost!  Oregon certainly has a variety of climates and scenery--my husband loves the desert but I like some green now and then--more than sagebrush!  :D

Denio has a store..  a gas station, a restaurant (almost)...    and a website that really reflects pride in a small community.  It's a ranch town.

http://www.denio-nv.net/

Links to Fields and The Steens.   Make sure you stop and get a milk shake in Fields.

There is a private rv park and a nice county park at the base of The Steens at a place called Frenchglen.  The Frenchglen hotel serves fantastic meals, family style, and for everone who shows up.   We stayed two nights at the county park..  nice, clean, lots of trees an room.   Took a day trip up to the top of Steens and the the wildlife area.

http://donb.furfly.net/malheur/places/frenchglen.html

If you have a program like MS Streets and Trips, look for the real small places along the way and then do a google search for them.  It is amazing what these small communties have for fun.  Some do not have a website, but usually someone has written about them.

Have a fun and safe trip.

Thank you all, for all the links and ideas for places to see and stay. I am sure more will come in. Hopefully we have enough time to plan our trip and see as much as we can on the drive there and back. It is going to be expensive as far as fuel goes so we have to plan as much as possible so as not to waste any time and fuel. We are looking forward to matching faces to all the names we have seen on this great site. I hope this will be the first of many more trips to La Grande.

There was an Oregon Public Broadcasting show a few years ago which included the daughter of the owners of that private rv park.  The show was about the students of the only publicly funded boarding high school remaining in the US.  It's still operated in that area due to the distances from the ranches to schools.

The dinner at the Frenchglen Hotel is almost worth the drive out their by itself.  It's a good idea to stop by the hotel earlier in the day or to call ahead as they only seat about 20 people if my memory is correct.

The most trivial fact I learned on our trip to that area while driving the highway between Frenchglen & Fields:  it's apparently possible to save money and fool cattle by painting stripes across the highway to make it look like a real cattle guard.

When I was there, the town had a bar/restaurant/motel/gas station---thats all. Hunters landed their planes on the highway. Lots of years have past, so I can't say what's there now, but I bet it hasn't changed much. It was desert and quiet!

FYI about Denio Jct. gas is $4.00+ p/gal (just came thru there), Little has changed, air strip is on the North side of the place, NHP frown on landing on the pavement any more.

Fun to sit there and watch the NEWBIES to the area, they have this funny look, Kinda like "OH MY GOD, WHERE ARE WE", priceless to see, after the shock, they seem to enjoy the area, if they stay around long enough.

Just a wide spot in the road, with a whole lot of quite and scenic high desert speading out in all four directions, best come fully prepared to enjoy the views as the closest store/shopping is a 100+ miles in either direction, other than the usual snacks/beer/soft drinks items etc, Denio Jct is a small place to eat, sleep, get some motion lotion, and bar all rolled into one place.  :D Don.

Hi Lars, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I have been very busy around home and work. The wife and I have not made any definite plans as to where we are going to stop and stay. We have two weeks of vacation time so we need to plan it out somewhat carefully. We are somewhat thinking of Crater lake but would also like to do the Oregon cost but it is kink of the different direction. I will let you know when we have some type of plan devised.

Mike: We've hit Crater Lake NP the first two weeks in June and there was much of the park that we were not able to see due to snow covered roads. The south entrance will be open and you can see the Crater and the visitors center...still worth the visit but you might call ahead and see what is open.   Ben

Definately check this year.  We have lots of snow in the mountains and it may be late getting cleared.

There was a light dusting in the valley today.   Northwood should have had a little snow.   Gone by 9.  Heatwave up to 40.5 right now.  ;)

Snow level on the mountian behind the house is at 22' in places.

Hi Lars,

We're coming to the rally from Orange County, too. We're spending some time in Zion NP, Salt Lake City, and Glens Ferry (ID) on the way up. You mentioned you're taking your time getting to the rally; just thought I'd reply with our route in case, coincidentally, you may be heading to some of the same places. Let us know - it would be fun to hook up.

A & D
