Since we've been asked to reduce the number of pictures we display as attachments to reduce the load on the NROA website, I thought I would take a few minutes to explain one way to do this, using the WebShots site as a place to store your pictures.
If you go to http://www.webshots.com you'll see a link on the upper right that says "sign up for free". Click this link, answer a few simple questions, and select a free account. This allows you to store 1000 pictures, plus an additional 100 for each month you are a member.
After you create an account, click the second link on the menu bar, which says "my shots". This will display a list of your albums (blank to begin with). More importantly, you will now see an "upload more" button. Press this button, then press the "Add Files" button that shows on the next screen. This will give you a box to select pictures that are on your computer, and add them to the list shown on the screen.
After you have selected the pictures you want to upload, click the "Create a new album" choice under step 2 of the upload process. Type in a name for your album.
Finally, press the "Upload" button at the bottom and wait for the pictures to be uploaded to WebShots.
After the pictures are uploaded, they will be displayed on a screen where you can change the names or add comments. At the bottom of the screen will be an option to save your pictures and view the album. Select that option.
Now you will be viewing the album of pictures you just created. To include one of these pictures in a post here, click on the picture you want to include in your post. That picture will show up in a large version on a screen by itself.
Scroll down the page, and look for the "link to this picture" box on the right hand side. At the top you'll see 5 size options, for 100, 200, 425, 500 and 600 pixels. Click one of those buttons to get the size you want. I'll show my example image at 100, 200 and 500 pixels below.
After you click the size you want, it will say "generating codes for xxx pixel image, and the three little boxes of code stuff will change.
You want to copy the code in the box under "direct link to image", so highlight the code shown in that box, and press Ctrl-C to copy the code.
Now, switch back to your NROA message window where you want to post the picture, like right here. Click the fourth button from the right in the toolbar above your message; this button will display the tooltip "Insert Image" if you let your mouse sit over it for a few seconds.
When you click that button, a little box will pop up that says Explorer User Prompt at the top, then in the box it says Script Prompt: User URL: and there is an entry box. Click your mouse in the entry box, then press Ctrl-V to paste the code for the picture into the entry box. Press the OK button and your image will show up in the message where ever the cursor was located when you hit the image button.
This is a 100-pixel image of our traveler's card, inserted as described above. It's kinda small.
This is a 200-pixel image, and shows a little better detail.
Finally, below I'll show a 500-pixel image, and I'll hit the "center paragraph" button before I insert the image, so it will be centered in the message.

Hope this helps!

Since I have been notified by PM, I that my posting of pictures has been main cause of the problem, I appoligize to Adam and the rest of the deputies. Shotgun, does this resolve the server problems.
Here is my new way of posting with a URL Link to my Photo Bucket:
Make sure it works, I am posting NorCal Mike's trailer on his first trip.

Hey, Tom, if you hit the image button (4th from the right above your message) and paste in that same URL, it will display the picture "inline" so it doesn't have to be clicked:

Thanks guys, I have been gone all day long and I am glad to see that you have all stepped up to the plate and posted solutions to the problem. This will help a lot to reduce the load on our server.....
If anyone has any questions I will be glad to help as much as I can.....

Tom,
No need to apologize at all, you did not know, and you are not the only one. I have not said anything up to this point so there was no way for anyone to know it was starting to be a problem. Actually it was only a couple of weeks ago before I really noticed how the attachment system worked, then I realized why the database was increasing in size so fast the last couple of months. I would have thought that the attachments would have gone into an image folder somewhere and not into the database itself. I just want to rectify the situation before it really starts to drain the server resources. Thanks for understanding and making the changes to help us out!
Your way is fine, but DLSeeAmerica's way works even better. By inserting the image link in your post using the "insert image" button the picture shows up without the need to click on a link. The picture is off our server, so none of our server space or database is being used to store or display the picture.
I was going to do a post explaining how to do this, but I had prior commitments yesterday and Don beat me to it..... Thank you Don for your most informing post!!!!!

Don, great help there on using webshots.
One question: what size pic did you use for your avatar? It looks bigger than 200 but smaller than 500.

That picture is actually 633 X 220, custom cropped to get just the image I wanted... then when I uploaded it as an avatar, the site reduced it to the current size.

| I attempted to use webshots and got as far as selecting the "4th button from the right in the message toolbar". The 4th button is quotation marks. I'm confused on how to paste the direct link to image in WebShots.

The button you want to use to post your photo link you copied from Webshots looks like three balls, one red one on top of two green(or blue) ones. If you are using explorer you will probably see a message drop down from the tool bar that you have to click on to accept scripted windows. Then after accepting scripted windows you will need to click on the 3 little ball tab again and a window will open up where you can paste your link. Make sense???
I just went to your post and posted your link in the scripted window and now your photo shows up in your post without clicking on the link.

| I've been playing with it this morning and found also, if you have a picture that is too big to upload as an avatar, you can preview a smaller version on Webshots, copy and paste it to your pictures file on the computer, and then upload it that way.
