EDITED: 4-18-08 As of today we have turned off allowing attachments to topic posts in this forum. The pictures are adding to our database size at an alarming rate, and it is just taking to long to do the daily backups. So from now on, to show pictures on this forum, you will have to post your pictures elsewhere on the internet and link to them in your posts. Sorry folks, we are just getting to big to deal with the pictures....
OK folks, it was fun, but it is starting to be a real pain in the neck, so I have made some changes, and I am going to put the following out as a request first before turning off the option all together. I have also changed the way you are going to view posted pictures, you are now going to have to click on picture links to view each picture to try to lessen the bandwidth load for our server.
The practice of attaching pictures to topic posts needs to change. As it now stands, it is VERY easy to attach pictures to topic posts. It is also very cool to see a lot of pictures, BUT it is adding a load to the server, and mostly adding a tremendous load to the sites database. Every attachment to a post is stored in the sites MySQL database, and it is starting to add to the backup time in a huge way. Just the sites MySQL database size is over 65 meg ZIPPED right now, and I have to download that each and every day just in case of a server failure (has happened a couple times in the history of this site).
So, from here on out, I am going to request that pictures are posted on another source and linked to in posts rather than being attached to the post itself. To help explain this a little, do the following:
Go to Adam's recent post about adding a white racing stripe to his trailer:
http://www.afnash.com/forum/view_topic.php?id=5905&forum_id=16
When there, place your cursor over Adam's posted picture and right click on it. Then scroll down to "Properties" and click on that. You will notice that in the address bar (URL) it says:
http://inlinethumb39.webshots.com/18022/2096303950053784406S500x500Q85.jpg
He has posted his picture on the webshots.com website and just linked to that picture in his topic post. What this does is takes the data from that picture and puts it on the webshots server and not ours. When a visitor visits his topic on the forum, their browser actually downloads the picture from webshots and not from our server afnash.com. It also keeps his picture from becoming part of the sites database and does not increase our server load at all.
If you do this same procedure on other peoples posted pictures you will notice http://www.afnash.com/forum/attachment.php?...... in the address bar when clicking on "Properties". These pictures are stored on our server in the sites MySQL database. Whenever anyone visits any of the topics these pictures are posted in, the server has to upload all these pictures adding to the sites bandwidth requirements in a huge fashion. Between the database load and this bandwidth drain, it is starting to cause real problems.
SO, from here on out, please post your pictures on an outside source, and link to them in your posts rather than attaching them directly. If we don't control this problem, I am going to have to turn off the option entirely which I would like to avoid doing. An occasional picture here or there is not a problem, but the amount of pictures being attached lately has jumped tremendously and the practice needs to change or our sites resources will quickly be depleted.
Thanks everyone, hope you all understand......

| Thanks, Shotgun, for explaining this to the members. I know there must be other like myself who don't have a clue on how the technical side of the forum works and that pictures (which I don't know how to post) make such a difference. Someone who knows about the outside sources available might make some suggestions and how to go about choosing a source. It is something we have thought of. You have mentioned Adam's webshot site.

Don (DLSeeAmerica) has taken the time to post a GREAT explanation of how to use Web Shots to store your pictures and link to them in your topics. Please visit the following post to get the idea. If you have any questions I would be happy to answer them. THANK YOU DON!!!!!
