Just got the Excursion, (see signature if it shows up:( - didn't on the preview). Haven't towed with it yet - have to get the brake controller installed first. Have a trip planned in June, so I've got to get the controller in.

Traded in a 00 GMC Yukon 4x4, 5.3L. The seats weren't comfortable for me on long trips. Also the gas tank wasn't big enough for towing. On windy days in Southern CA, I could only do about 150 miles before fillup, (had a difficult time getting into Arizona on a tank of gas to save $$ on fill-up). Anyone who's driven I-40 knows what I'm talking about!

Update 8/5/04: Have towed our Nash 22H now several times over some pretty severe passes in So. Cal. No problems with the Excursion - just keeps accelerating up the climbs. No cooling issues either. We really like the trailer and tow vehicle combo. I get 17 - 20 mpg freeway, and 11 - 12 mpg consistently towing.

Klenger:

I'm a newbie and just discovered the Arctic Fox user's site, and your site. Your site is excellent, and I'l take some time to "digest it". So many interesting informations! Congratulations!

I'd like to give a suggestion that,  IMHO, would be interesting in the generator's area. Decibels, or DB's, used as volume of sound measure, is logarithmic, like the earthquakes's Richter scale. Each decibel extra means the double of the volume of sound!

The difference between Honda EU series and the others, of any make, including Honda itself, is staggering, and the simple comparison of numbers aligned in your table won't give to the reader an idea of the reality. Some comentary about this before or after your table would be an interesting info for your "fans". I'm already one!

Cheers,

Ed

We are towing a Desert Fox 28k with a 2003 Chervrolet Silverado 4X4 crew cab that has the towing package, the snowplow package, the 6.0, the 4.10 rear end  and an automatic transmission.  We have towed a total of 647 miles so far, utilizing an Equal-i-zer hitch and a Protegy brake controller.  The trailer seems to be well within the capacity of the truck as equipped, and I must say it towed like a dream with virtually no sway at all from passing trucks.   Our average mpg while towing was 8.5.

Well we started out by towing a 1972 Shasta 23 ft TT with a 1967 Ford 3/4 w/352 V8 for many many years. Didn't know that you could pull a hill faster than 35mph in second gear! Then went to a 87 Chev 350 and bought a 2004 Prowler 220RBS. Was everything that 350 could do to get that new trailer down the road, so a friend that works for the local Chevy dealer called me about a 2002 Chevy they just got in. Went and looked at it, saw it was a beautifull rig with only 15k miles on it. Had everything I wanted plus, Extra Cab Long Bed with the Vortec 8.1L V8 (496 cu.in. for us older folks) and Allison Tranny. Come to find out, you don't have to go up passes and hills in second gear doing 35mph with overheating problems when your RVing afterall....

All I can say about this truck is WOW!!! The Allison tranny is amazing, like it has brains of it's own. Very seldom does it not shift automatically at a time that I would not if it was a manual, even down shifting going down hills. The 8.1L sucks a little gas, but for the price I paid (17 grand less than a new truck), I figure I can drive it a long time on that 17 grand. Pulls the Prowler up passes here in Central Oregon at 65mph with no problems. I can't believe that we now go RVing without people passing me all the time giving me the one finger "your number 1" wave as they go by. My kids joke all the time about how the younger generation "hot Honda" type cars get beat between stop lights by a truck with a boat on top...

Can't wait for the AF 22H to get here tomorrow and give it a pull. Lighter tounge weight than the Prowler but 200 lbs heavier over all. I have a feeling I won't even know it's back there....

Generator db's are really important for anyone who has to live with them.  However, acoustic engineering is one of the more mathematically complicated fields and that isn't quite the form of the log.  One decibel is usually about the minimum change in amplitude that the human ear can detect.  Perception is relative, but for most people, an increase of 3 - 6 db. is registered as the sound being twice as loud.  Thus, a generator unit that was 12 db. higher in noise compared to another would normally have about quadruple the irritation (assuming the measurements are in equivalent conditions).  On the other hand, one rated 1 db. lower might be hard to differentiate.

Speaking of decibels, aren't those new diesel engines from the Big Three quieting down??!?  Yay!  :P   Nice job, guys.

I just put a deposit down on a 2004.5 Dodge 3500 Laramie CTD-600 auto QC 4x4 LWB SRW.  It's bright white with the taupe leather interior.  I'll wait until I pick it up (in two weeks) and drive it a while to decide about step bars, a cap, and all those other fun additions.  I'm going to miss my V-10, but after five years I'm ready for something new - and 600 lb-ft of torque sounds like just the ticket! :)

Hey Stuart,
Now that should get the job done:) I think the missing your V10 will fade a little with each hill you effortlessly pull!

Stuart- The grin factor of the CTD is a 10+. With (just) 460ft#s- my 22h could be upside down & sideways and I wouldnt know it by the way this truck pulls. You wont miss your V-10 at all. Good Luck-

We have a new 2004 Dodge 2500 Diesel with tow package and we want to fulltime in a Fox 29-5E (5th Wheel). I've been looking at numbers till my eyes have crossed, and am afraid I don't have enough truck. But the 27-5L, while smaller doesn't seem any lighter. Will I have to give up my dream of an Arctic Fox for fulltiming? I don't think we can live in one smaller than the 27-5L. This is all brand new to me and I am feeling dismayed and confused and I need help.
